The Dalí Theatre-Museum in Figueres is literally a 5-minute walk from Ca La Fustereta. For guests this is a huge advantage: you can visit first thing in the morning, before the tour coaches arrive, and enjoy it in peace. It is Spain's most visited museum relative to the size of its host town, and one of the most singular surrealist spaces in the world.
Salvador Dalí was born in Figueres in 1904 and always regarded the Empordà capital as his spiritual birthplace. The building housing the museum was the city's Municipal Theatre, almost entirely destroyed during the Spanish Civil War in 1939. Dalí, who had exhibited his very first works in that theatre as a teenager, conceived the idea of transforming it into his greatest legacy.
Construction lasted more than a decade, and the museum opened in 1974. Dalí designed it not as a conventional museum but as "the largest surrealist object in the world": each room is an experience in itself. He lived in the private apartments above the dome until shortly before his death in 1989. His remains rest in the crypt in the basement.
The museum opens Tuesday to Sunday (closed Mondays outside high season). From June to September it opens every day from 9am to 8pm, including Friday and Saturday nights until midnight with the Dalí Night show — a completely different experience from the daytime visit.
Tickets cost between €14 and €18 for adults (under 9 free). Always book at the official website salvador-dali.org at least 48 hours ahead in high season. In summer, tickets sell out days in advance and are not available at the ticket desk on the day without a prior booking. If you stay at Ca La Fustereta you can walk there in 5 minutes — no parking needed.
The best time is at 9am when the doors open. In July and August the queues are already long by 10am and the rooms fill with audio-guide groups. Staying at Ca La Fustereta means you can walk over calmly, be among the first in, and have the museum almost to yourself for the first hour.
The Dalí Night visit is highly recommended for adult guests: the museum lit at night with far fewer visitors has a completely different atmosphere and lets you appreciate works that get lost in the daytime crowd.
The Fundació Gala-Salvador Dalí runs three museums in northern Catalonia that form a circuit unique in the world. Using Ca La Fustereta as your base, you can visit all three comfortably:
Our recommendation: Day 1 Theatre-Museum in the morning + Figueres in the afternoon. Day 2 Portlligat in the morning + Cadaqués in the afternoon. Day 3 Púbol on the way to Barcelona or Girona.
Many visitors don't realise that Figueres has far more to offer than the museum. The Sant Ferran Castle — 15 minutes on foot — is one of the largest 18th-century fortresses in Europe and well worth a visit. The Museu de l'Empordà, right opposite the Theatre-Museum, is free and has an excellent archaeological and modern art collection. And the local food scene surprises most visitors: read our article on where to eat well in Figueres to avoid the tourist restaurants around the museum.
5 minutes from the Dalí Theatre-Museum. The best base for exploring Figueres and the Alt Empordà.
