Alt Empordà is one of Catalonia's richest regions: the Dalí Theatre-Museum, the Costa Brava, a paradise for cyclists, Cap de Creus, Cadaqués, Besalú... The offer is so vast that the first question everyone asks is where to stay to make the most of it.
We wrote this guide from Ca La Fustereta, in the centre of Figueres, drawing on the experience of welcoming guests who come to discover the region. Not everyone has the same needs, and the best area to stay depends greatly on what you want to do.
The capital of Alt Empordà. Direct high-speed rail to Barcelona (55 min), Dalí Museum on foot, ideal base for day trips to Cadaqués, Besalú, Peralada and Cap de Creus.
Best logistical baseThe option if your main goal is the beach and the sea. Access is complex (mountain roads), summers are very busy and accommodation is noticeably more expensive. Spectacular scenery and views.
Best for beachPeace, nature and rural tourism. Farmhouses and country houses with character. Empuriabrava for water sports. A car is essential for almost everything.
Rural tranquillityFigueres is the only practical option. You have the high-speed AVE, regional trains and buses for day trips. The Costa Brava is not viable without your own vehicle.
Stay in Figueres. You'll walk out of your accommodation and be at the museum in 5 minutes. The Dalí Triangle (Portlligat and Cadaqués) makes a perfect day trip.
Figueres is the best starting point. The Empordà plain, the Fluvià route to Besalú and the Dalí Triangle are all reachable from the centre. You need a private garage for your bike.
The Costa Brava (Roses, Cadaqués, Llançà) is the best choice. You can combine it with a car trip to Figueres in half an hour. Book well ahead in summer.
Figueres works very well: the Dalí Museum fascinates children, Sant Ferran Castle is great for exploring, and there's space to move around. Day trips to the beach by car are easy from here.
The Empordà interior (farmhouses, country houses) is perfect. Peralada, the plain between Figueres and the Albera mountains. A car is needed and you value peace over connectivity.
At Ca La Fustereta we offer two holiday apartments in a restored modernista building at Carrer Pi i Margall, 30 — a 5-minute walk from the Dalí Theatre-Museum and 10 minutes from the AVE high-speed station.
