A weekend in Figueres: a two-day plan for couples and families

A weekend in Figueres gives you far more than the Dalí Theatre-Museum. In two days you can fit in the museum, the market, Sant Ferran Castle and an afternoon in the wetlands or on the Costa Brava, almost all of it on foot. This is the plan we give our guests, with official opening times and versions for couples and for families with children.

How to plan a weekend in Figueres
Figueres is Dalí's home town and the capital of the Alt Empordà, in the north of Catalonia. Check the calendar first: Dalí's Birthplace is closed on Mondays and, outside July and August, so are the Dalí Theatre-Museum and Sant Ferran Castle; the Toy Museum closes on Sundays and Mondays between 9 September and 24 June. So the best plan is to arrive on Friday afternoon, spend Saturday in town and keep Sunday for the castle and the countryside.
Our holiday rentals have a two-night minimum and check-in from 15:00 to 21:00, so a Friday-to-Sunday stay fits neatly. From Ca La Fustereta, on Carrer Pi i Margall, La Rambla is a 3-minute walk and the Dalí Theatre-Museum about 5 minutes away, so the car can stay in the garage until Sunday.
Saturday morning in Figueres: Dalí Theatre-Museum and the market
Go to the museum first thing, before it fills up. It opens at 10:30 for most of the year (9:30 from 23 March to 31 May and in September, and 9:00 to 20:00 in July and August) and closes at 18:00; entry and the ticket office close 45 minutes earlier. Buy your ticket online from the Gala-Salvador Dalí Foundation: general admission from €18.50, reduced from €15, and children aged 0 to 8 go free. Allow an hour and a half to two hours; rooms 23 and 24 hold the collection of jewels Dalí designed.
Travelling with a baby? The museum does not allow pushchairs, bags worn on the back or anything larger than 35 × 35 × 25 cm. As you are only a five-minute walk away, leave the buggy at home and bring a front carrier instead. There are baby-changing facilities.
Saturday is also market day. In Plaça del Gra, under its covered structure from 1886, and in Plaça Catalunya you will find vegetables from local Empordà growers, cured meats, cheese, honey, nuts and olive oil: perfect for Sunday breakfast if you are self-catering. For more on the museum, read our Dalí Theatre-Museum guide.
Saturday afternoon: Dalí's Birthplace or the Toy Museum
For couples, Dalí's Birthplace (Casa Natal Salvador Dalí, Carrer Monturiol 6) is the house where the painter was born, now an immersive space of images and sound. It opens Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 19:00 (last entry 18:00) and the visit takes about 1 hour 15 minutes.
For families, the Toy Museum of Catalonia (Museu del Joguet, Carrer de Sant Pere 1, just off La Rambla) is a must, and Saturday is the day to go: outside summer it stays open until 19:00 and it is closed on Sundays. Three floors of trains, tin cars, board games, soft toys, doll's houses and pre-cinema toys make it what the town calls the third most important toy museum in the world. Tickets are €8, €6.50 reduced (ages 6 to 16) and free for children up to 5.
One tip: the Toy Museum stops selling tickets 20 minutes before closing, so don't leave it to the last minute. For dinner, see our pick of where to eat in Figueres.
Sunday: Sant Ferran Castle and a trip around the Alt Empordà
Sant Ferran Castle is the largest 18th-century fortress in Europe: 32 hectares built between 1753 and 1808, with views over Figueres and the whole plain. It opens 10:00 to 18:00, Tuesday to Sunday, in April, May, June, September and October; 10:00 to 16:00 from November to March; and daily 10:00 to 20:00 in July and August (last entry one hour before closing). There are three ways to see it:
- Self-guided visit: no booking needed, with a 14-point map and audio, at your own pace.
- The water cathedral: 30 minutes by inflatable boat, with a guide, through one of the four cisterns, which hold up to 9 million litres. It is an enclosed space, worth bearing in mind with very young children.
- Secrets of the moat: an hour in an adapted electric vehicle, with a guide, on a flat route of almost 3 km. It can be combined with the cisterns in a 90-minute visit.
In the afternoon, head out of town. The Aiguamolls de l'Empordà nature park is about 20 minutes by car; its El Cortalet information centre opens daily from 9:00 to 18:30 between 1 March and 24 October, and 9:00 to 17:00 the rest of the year. Castelló d'Empúries is about 15 minutes away, Roses and its bay about 25 and Cadaqués about 45. Find more ideas on our page about accommodation and short breaks in the Alt Empordà.
A weekend in Figueres for couples
For two, L'Apartament at Ca La Fustereta is on the third floor, with a double bed and a private sun terrace to end the day in the sun, from €90 a night. The plan that works best for couples: Saturday for the museum, the market and Dalí's Birthplace; Sunday for the castle in the morning and Cadaqués in the afternoon, back in Figueres for dinner. The private garage is included, so the car stays put while you explore on foot.
A family weekend in Figueres with kids
For families, La Casa Gran takes up the second floor: up to 8 guests in 4 bedrooms with 2 double beds and 2 bunk beds, 2 bathrooms, a full kitchen, a washing machine and a private terrace with barbecue, from €190 a night plus cleaning. Cots and baby equipment are available on request, and there is a play area. Two families travelling together can book the whole building (up to 10 guests, 5 bedrooms and 2 terraces) when both homes are free.
The kids' version: the Dalí and Toy museums on Saturday, the castle cisterns by boat and the wetlands on Sunday.
